Youths Major Shield Q/F
Raharney United - 3 ⚽️⚽️⚽️
Athboy Celtic FC - 3 ⚽️⚽️⚽️
Raharney Win 3-2 on penalties 🔥
Raharney Youths continue their flying form!
On Tuesday night, we welcomed Athboy to Higginstown which was in fine order for what was to be a tough cup tie. Athboy started the fastest and raced into a 2 goal lead as Raharney struggled to get grips on the game.
The water break came at a good time for us and allowed us to regroup and make a couple of changes. One of the changes was the introduction of Nathan who scored with his first touch after Stephen and Kyle combined well. Raharney made it 2-2 just before half time when Alfie got on the end of a loose ball in the box and he took his chance well. Athboy pressed on again to try reestablish their lead but the Raharney defence stood firm and the first half ended 2-2.
Both teams were evenly matched second half with both Jack and the Athboy keeper having some fine saves. It was Raharney who took the lead when Kon broke down the right and squared the ball for Nathan, who finished well. Athboy pushed on for the equaliser and got one with 10 minutes to go, to leave a very tense end to the game. Both teams had chances to win it in normal time but it remained 3-3 until full time.
With the lights starting to fade, both coaches and the ref agreed to go to straight to penalties in what would be Raharney’s first shootout. It was Shayne up first who finished well to the corner as Athboy put their first penalty wide. Next up was Alfie who seen his penalty come off the crossbar. Athboy converted their next one to level it up before Kon slotted home to regain Raharney’s lead. Jack saved Athboys next penalty to put Raharney in the drivers seat. But when both Evan and Kyle missed their penalties, it went to sudden death. First up for Raharney was Thomas McGee who scored to put all the pressure on Athboy to score but Jack pulled off a magnificent save to win it for the lads.
An excellent team performance from the lads with 1 to 15 putting in an excellent effort.
Man of the match tonight goes to our super keeper Jack who had some brilliant saves in the game and was the hero in the penalty shootout with 2 excellent saves.
Thank you to Athboy for travelling to Higginstown!
🔵 Well done Raharney!🔵
